Wheelchair Assessments

Heidi Hoskins, an occupational therapist, describes what happens during a wheelchair assessment and what types of wheelchairs patients might need.

What type of wheelchair might a patient need?

I complete the wheelchair assessments here at Memorial, which involves any level of wheelchair. It could be a very standard manual wheelchair; an ultralight manual wheelchair, such as a sports manual wheelchair; any level of scooter to power chair; or a very involved group three higher level rehab power chair.

What happens during a wheelchair assessment?

When we do an assessment, it involves the patient, the caregivers, and a vendor from the preferred company of the patient. We try to do a collaborative approach with the wheelchair assessment so that all the questions and needs are answered at one session and the patient knows exactly what they will receive when they do get fitted for their wheelchair.
